How Criminals Are Using COVID-19 Outbreak to Gain Access to ATMs
With the rise of city-mandated quarantines, curfews and attendance caps on gatherings, criminals have taken aim at Independent ATM Deployers (IADs) in an attempt to capitalize on the pandemic and access money from, or even steal, ATMs.
Thieves are entering private establishments posing as IAD owners or employees, persuading merchants to give them access to the machines. Once they gain access, they either empty the machine contents or claim they are servicing the machine and remove it from the premises.
In order to keep your machines secure during this tumultuous time, it is recommended to follow the following guidelines.
Ensure your ATMs are properly secured
Offense is the best defense when protecting your ATM from technological or physical attacks. Keep ATM software up-to-date and protect your ATM from brute-force entry by maintaining appropriate physical barriers and surveillance.
ATMs should be bolted to the ground whenever feasible. Avoid placing machines in locations that do not have video surveillance. Learn how to best protect your ATM terminals.
Properly Label ATMs
Use “GPS Tracked Machine” stickers whenever possible to help dissuade thieves from stealing your machine. Place stickers where clearly visible to both users and potential threats. Stickers are readily available through many retailers.
Open Communication is Key When Protecting ATMs from Criminals
Maintain a positive relationship with management of each location in which your ATMs are housed in order to protect against criminal activity. Open and frequent communication is vital. Whenever possible, visit store locations so management and employees are familiar with you. Maintaining a close relationship will encourage management and employees to keep a closer eye on your machine and inform you of any suspicious activity.
Notify management and staff to keep an eye out for anybody approaching the machine as if it were their own that isn’t you or your employees.
You can also provide pictures of your employees to store ownership; many store owners will be more than happy to request a business card and ID before allowing access to a machine in their store.
