Don’t Leave Your ATM Fleet Open to Security Breaches
Extensive information is available for Independent ATM Deployers (IADs) to thwart attacks on their ATM fleets. Both physical break-ins and software breaches are commonplace in the business, and criminals continue to find innovative ways to breach security. For some machines, a simple Google search can even yield step-by-step instructions for hackers to access the machine’s software to dispense cash.
It has never been more important to secure your fleet from both physical and technological break-ins. While EFX has published a multitude of articles and tips for protecting your fleet, here you will find common security gaps and how to address them.
One Size Does Not Fit All for ATM Security
Even within your own ATM fleet, one size does not fit all for security needs. Every ATM within your fleet should be treated individually and a customized security plan should be implemented. Some ATMs may be in high crime areas, in poorly lit areas, or in less trafficked areas, making a break-in a higher possibility. Treat these ATMs differently than those inside businesses, those in low-crime areas, and those regularly visited by patrons. Here are some of our best tips for increasing the physical security of your ATMs in higher crime areas.
Fully Commit to Security
Unfortunately, many IADs wait until the worst happens before taking action to increase security. However, it is a lot less expensive in this industry to be proactive than reactive. There are simple steps to increase security at each of your terminals.
Make sure fleet software is regularly updated and that machines are physically checked on regularly as well.
Document Your Emergency Plan
No matter the size of the fleet, it is vital to have a documented emergency plan for both physical and technological break-ins.
You may have a vague idea of how you would like to respond in an emergency situation, but if it ever occurs, having a step-by-step list is an invaluable asset to ensure you react promptly and compliantly to report losses to the authorities, your processor and your insurer.
It is often wise to go through a mock attack scenario in order to create this document.
Individualized ATM Security is More Cost-Effective
IADs will find it is more cost-effective to implement a customized security plan by machine than a blanket plan by fleet. Instead of spending your security budget equally across your machines, analyze which machines may be targeted by criminals, and allocate more funds accordingly.
IADs may find it helpful to analyze each machine by location, age, and usage. By objectively looking at each of these factors, you will easily be able to determine which machines may require more attention.
